ProductiveParalegals are an integral part of the legal system. From researching case law to communicating with clients to drafting pleadings, paralegals must maintain a wide range of knowledge and skills. Thankfully, there are a ton of resources available to help paralegals do just that. They range from books to organizations and are plentiful and state-specific.

Paralegal Associations

The Paralegal Association of New Jersey
PANJ’s mission is to “foster and promote uniform educational standards and practice guidelines for the legal assistant” as well as providing “education of the public for the advancement and improvement of the legal assistant profession.”  The organization is an affiliate of the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). Annual dues are $50 for members and $30 for associate members.

South Jersey Paralegal Association
SJPA is “dedicated to promoting the paralegal profession by networking, offering continuing legal education classes, mentoring students, and educating the public.” It is an affiliate of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) and offers a New Jersey Certified Paralegal Program to help members build their credentials.

Paralegal Job Search Websites

The New Jersey Courts
This governmental website provides a job listing page with both governmental and private job postings. These include includes paralegal jobs, other legal support jobs and internships throughout New Jersey.

The Paralegal Association of New Jersey’s Job Bank
PANJ’s website features a jobs bank page listing paralegal jobs in New Jersey. You must request access to the job board via password by emailing caroljsnyder96@gmail.com.

The Litigation Paralegal: A Systems Approach
This textbook-style manual works through the major types of litigation procedures and gives guidelines for document drafting, technology usage in litigation practice and rules and ethics compliance.

New Jersey Notary Law Primer
If you are a paralegal who also serves as a notary, this book is a must. The holy grail of New Jersey notary law resource books, the New Jersey Notary Law Primer gives detailed explanations of New Jersey Notary laws and requirements for every legal procedure imaginable. It also includes simple, step-by-step instructions for performing notarizations.

New Jersey Family Law Handbook: A Reference Guide to New Jersey Case Law and Statutes
This handbook on New Jersey family law is a wonderful reference book. It covers areas including marriage and marital contracts; children and adoption; the family and divorce; alimony and child support; the family and parentage; and children, custody, and visitation.

New Jersey Foreclosure Law & Practice
Described as a “treatise on New Jersey foreclosure law”, this book guides readers through methods of legal research and strategy in the foreclosure law practice. A new version is released every year with updates to the law and methodology, including new technological resources available, as well as an updated forms library.

New Jersey Insurance Law
This annually-released paperback book provides the most updated information on New Jersey insurance policies, issues and law. It also includes tips for legal research specific to New Jersey insurance law.
